A Brief History:

The history of Osuna goes back about three thousand years, when the Iberos found the city of Urso, named after the great abundance of bears in the area .The Romans had a legion based here and Osuna was a place of great culture and splendor.Pompey made his last unsuccessful stand against Caesar in Osuna, the city fell into his rival's hands, and Caesar gave it the status of a colony (Colonia Genetiva Iulia), the importance of which is suggested by the laws found in the "Osuna Bronzes".several objects remain from this period, such as the
"Bull of Osuna"
the bull of Osuna           and the "Reliefs of Osuna"
In the Muslim period it is known as Oxona being conquered in 1239 by the Castilian armies of Fernando III Santo. In 1264 it is granted to the order of Calatrava by King Alfonso X and then becomes Encomienda de Osuna.
Because of its strategic
position, it becomes a crucial point for the defense of the border line with the nazarí kingdom of Granada. In the 1OSUNA VIEW5th century, the calatravos horsemen yield the city of Osuna to D. Pedro Téllez de Girón, whose descendants receive the title of Dukes of Osuna during the reign of Felipe II.
In 1460, while the Master of the Order was Pedro Giron, the town was traded fro Fuenteovejuna and Belmez, as a result of which it became the seat of the Counts of Ureña. In 1562 the 5th Count of Ureña was made 1st Duke of Osuna, and from then on Osuna became the Andalusian capital of the domains of the Tellez Giron family, who were the founders of the Collegiate Church and the University in the 16th century.
The religious Giron family made Osuna what it is today with the many
convents, churches, palaces and grand houses, looked over from high on the hill top by the Collegiate Church, the University and the remains of the ducal palace.
